3 Materials and Your Wardrobe

If you spend a lot of money on your fashion and clothes, surely you want those things to last? The best items are always made out of the same natural materials. It’s either cotton, wool, or leather. Take a look in your wardrobe right now and how many leather handbags can you see? How many amazing dresses can you see made out of cotton? How many comfortable jumpers and socks can you see made out of wool? All three of these materials need to be cared for if you want your clothes to remain looking and feeling amazing.

The flying beasts

During the summer, moths are breeding. If you live in a place where you can leave your windows open most of the day and throughout the night because it’s so hot and muggy, this gives moths a free ticket into your home and guesses where they will be going? That’s right, not into the moist shower. Wait, what? They would rather go into your wardrobe, find your wooly jumper, and bore a hole into it so they can lay their eggs. You might open your wardrobe one day and find hundreds of moths devouring your clothes. So time to fight back or prevent this from happening. This is what temperature kills clothes moths. There are different methods and all of them have varying degrees of success. Ironing is hit and miss, freezing your clothes will work but will shrink your clothes, washing your clothes is somewhat effective but it could stain your clothes. It’s best to use a preventive measure such as moth traps.

Handy handbag care

Leather handbags are very stylish and always will be. But not many women know how to get the maximum life out of their leather handbags. Remember, leather is skin, it’s living and breathing just like your own. So, keep leather out of direct sunlight as much as you can. Don’t overfill your handbag and stretch the grain. Scratches leave permanent scars on leather, so keep your cat away from it. Wet leather becomes loose and requires extra maintenance, so keep it out of the rain as well.

Use a leather conditioner to lubricate the surface. However, you can also use a leather cream and penetrate deep into the grain and boost its stretch and grain.  I use Leather Honey on my handbags and love the way it conditions them without being overly oily.  When you’re storing it, put it into a bag, but not one made from plastic because it will lack ventilation.

Lady in a cotton dress

The basic thing you need to know about caring for cotton is, the material doesn’t like heat. So, all of your best clothes made out of cotton, should not be cleaned in more than 25-degrees Celsius water. Once it shrinks, it cannot be brought back like wool can. Avoid using bleach as it can thin the cotton strands and make the garment weaker. Do not put your cotton garments into the dryer, they need to dry naturally, or else, they will shrink.

Our clothes say a lot about us, but for that privilege, we must pay a pretty penny for the best items. This is how you can make your wardrobe last longer.
