Looking After Your Mental Health During Lockdown

The current outbreak of Covid-19 has been scary and nerving so it has the ability to affect our mental health. It may be important to stay informed, but it is also important for us to look after our mental health, especially during the lockdown. Let’s have a look at some of the things you can do to keep your mental health in check through this time:  Even when most states are opening back up, these are great ways to stay strong mentally regardless of the world’s status!

Stay Away From The Negativity

Ok, so it may be difficult to stay away from all the negativity due to Covid-19, purely because, unfortunately, it is a negative time. However, as long as you keep yourself informed it’s a good idea to have a break from media, rumors, and bad news stories. The more you become involved with this the more of a bad impact it can have on your mental health, it can really drag you down. Think about doing fun activities at home, completing new projects, or going out for exercise rather than scrolling through social media and news reports all day.

Create A New Daily Routine

Just because you are spending more time at home doesn’t mean you are on a permanent vacation. You may be homeschooling or working from home, and if this is the case it’s important for you to still have a routine in place. Try not to have too many lie-ins or late nights and break the well-established routine you had in place before the lockdown. You may need to adapt it slightly, and that’s fine, in fact, it’s good for you to relook at your routine and pencil in some time for family, your daily exercise, and time to relax.  Recently I started working out again.  3 mornings a week before I jump into my day I do a 30-minute workout.  It not only makes me feel stronger physically but mentally as well.  Exercise is one of the best ways to boost mental health, so give it a try!

Act Normal

This might seem like something that is really simple. But think about it, have you started wearing PJs more often than you’d like to admit? Or when was the last time you put an effort to make yourself feel good? Maybe think about getting yourself a face mask, new eye palette, moisturizer, and some new clothes. Then have a normal day where you get ready as if you were going out for the day. It may be something small, but it can still have a huge impact on your mental health.   I know I can vouch for the fact that I feel so much better when I get dressed for the day!

Try To Stay Connected

In times of stress, we work better in the company of our friends and family, with support. Try and keep in touch with them, by telephone, email, or social media. If you’re isolating on your own, there is also plenty of support volunteers on call to just have a chat. You don’t even need to have long conversations with your friends and family just how are you today can go a long way to support each other mental health through this time.

Although times are hard and we’re going to have to keep an extra eye on both our and our loved one’s mental health, it’s important to remember that we are all going through the same and are in this together.
