Stacking Activity: A Toddler Montessori Based Work

Happy Monday everyone. This stacking activity today, a toddler Montessori based work will have your little one entertained on those cold winter days. I have to give my friend Erin over at Sixth Bloom credit for jump starting my brain in this direction. She has amazing toddler and preschool activities on her blog so make sure to check it out! Before I started blogging, I worked in a Montessori classroom post college helping out and leading a music program. While there, I learned so many ways to jump start toddlers into really learning concepts that we may normally put off to preschool or kindergarten age. It is amazing to see just how fast these little minds can absorb new things!

This stacking activity will teach your toddler:

1. Hand and eye coordination
2. Learn basic colors
3. How to sort
4. Pattern building

The best part of this activity is you do not need anything fancy or expensive. I would guess you have many of these items in your pantry.

1. Wooden skewers (these can be sharp so watch out! )
2. Fruit Loops
3. Espresso shot glass
4. Play dough

George and I first just talked about colors as we began. He remembers blue, green and orange well but needs help on the others. This was a fun way to help him along. After we got the colors pretty good we worked on separating them into stacks of colors. Sorting work in Montessori terms. We then started stacking the loops on skewers. This took a little practice but you should have seen the pride on his face once he got it! I love seeing my little boy light up when he learns something new. The next day we talked about patterns. This toddler activity allowed him to see pattern building in a whole new light and I think it has started to make sense to him. I like to leave this out on the table for him to come and work with when he wants. He also likes to sneak a few to eat too! 🙂

What types of activities do you like to do with your child? Let me know!
